Bio & Overview
Prem P. Batchala, MD, is a board-certified radiologist who specializes in nuclear medicine imaging — used to detect and treat an array of cancers. He has a special interest in brain tumors and neurodegenerative diseases.
He joined the UVA faculty in 2020 after completing fellowship training in neuroradiology and nuclear medicine at UVA.
“Clinical nuclear medicine uses different radioisotopes to image inside the body and treat patients,” Dr. Batchala says. “A large percentage of the imaging studies that I read every day and the patients I treat with radioisotopes are related to oncology or cancers of different kinds.”
He adds, “Nothing gives me more happiness than to see a positive or complete response to the cancer treatment in my patients. I am immensely grateful to my oncology colleagues, modern medicine, and the fighting spirit in my patients.”
Dr. Batchala was born in Puducherry, a small coastal town in southern India facing the Bay of Bengal. “Puducherry is a popular tourist destination, known for its architecture, food, and language still expressing the influences of French colonialism,” Dr. Batchala shares.
He completed medical school training in 2001 at India’s prestigious Jawaharlal Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education and Research (known as JIPMER). He then did radiology residency training at another prestigious institute, Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education & Research (PGIMER) in Chandigarh, northern part of India.
During his residency training, Dr. Batchala met his future wife. They have two sons. In his free time, Dr. Batchala enjoys cooking Indian food, and watching television and movies. He hopes to get more time for hiking and swimming.
